Stupid Office Policies

My boss said I could work from home on Friday.

This is key, because, thanks to the Reagan funeral, traffic is going to be hideous for me. My customer gets vacation. My boss is on leave. The other guy I work with is on leave.

But, it's the end of pay-period, and boss-of-boss claims I must either come into the office, or take leave. No telecommuting for me.

This blows. This blows much. I am not a happy puppy.

Use your icon's 40mm guns and get some payback. B)

When I get my DD(X), you will all tremble before me!

[identity profile] dlgood.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
And as a side note, those are 155mm guns.

[identity profile] ludditerobot.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't tell what sort of boat that was, so I erred on the side of PT. 155s would make that what? A destroyer?

[identity profile] dlgood.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It's the DD(X) - the "21st Century Destroyer" concept. It's supposed to go into production around 2006/7.

Cool.

I thought everything in today's Navy was either SOG stuff, connected to the Carrier Battle Group or missiles. It's nice to know that big guns are still part of the design.

I looked that up and found http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/dd-21.htm , which looks for all the world like a Skunkworks Stealth Submarine.

[identity profile] dlgood.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
The design is supposed to minimize radar signature, so that's not surprising.

The info there's fairly dated (they still call it DD-21) but it can give you a picture of where the Navy is headed - when the capital ships are more and more geared toward littoral/land-attack warfare.

[identity profile] ludditerobot.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. The last great ship-to-ship battles were in WWII, and really, the Battles of Pearl Harbor and Midway signalled the end of the battleship and the rise of the Carrier Battle Group. The return of the guns makes me question who they intend to fight with this. Even the big battleship guns can't extend firepower far beyond the horizon, and those are much smaller.

[identity profile] dlgood.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's not just that. We don't have the need for a huge bluewater navy, because there really aren't that many navies for us to oppose. Under the current navy leadership, the future is in mobile Sea Basing, and land attack support. (And missile defense)

The next generation of naval guns (and this is before we get into EMP weapons) are supposed to have precision over some extremely long distances.

[identity profile] ludditerobot.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
I get precision. I know that part. I'm curious how you can get longer distance without longer barrels.

And I haven't been keeping track of the Navy, being an AF brat, but the bluewater comment makes all the sense to me.

And I think we've now officially bored everyone else to tears.

You sound like Evil Little Dog Jebbie didn't give state workers off for the funeral. Me, I got laid off on monday because Jebbie also keeps cutting the budget and they actually ran out of money for TWO positions, both 20-30 hours a week but there was only one of us working (me) cut to 10 hours. I'm still puzzling out where 60 + hours of pay disappeared. Oh Mr Bush...

[identity profile] dlgood.livejournal.com 2004-06-10 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This is different. W gives federal employees off. However, I work for a private contracting firm, and we don't get holiday. Seeing as I'm saving my leave for the 4th of July time, I've got to work.

[identity profile] cornerofmadness.livejournal.com 2004-06-10 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that'll suck. When I worked for the feds I got off for Nixon's funeral which to me was just ironic since I worked in a VA hospital where you know they really shouldn't be giving leave time to the doctors for any reason.

I am not a happy puppy

Heh. Are you just a sad puppy with bad teeth, then?

Sorry, that sucks. Good luck with the traffic tomorrow!

Dude, WTF? Is this another one of those "rules for rules' sake" bs things?

[identity profile] mshepnj.livejournal.com 2004-06-11 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was sulking that my some of my friends in the Gub'ment and on Wall Street get the day off and I don't.

But I have to agree your situation does suck more... At least I don't have to use vacation time or try to go to work in DC today. Sorry, dude. I do feel for you.

Sorry about the whole traffic, boss-of-boss thing.
