Just watched the most recent Dollhouse episode - the one with the cult. Bonus point to the show for finding a plausible case for a circumstance where someone would actually require a Doll for a non-whore purpose. It made the storyline viable. Then again - this is something a fanatical FBI agent might actually do to go undercover. Although, no, it's not quite becoming a die-hard surfer.

More notably, the first scene shows singing cultists entering a general store, singing. I'm vaguely disappointed that in all the reviews of this episode - no one else noted that it's the same song sung repeatedly by "Reverend" Harry Powell in "The Night of the Hunter". I'm sure it was a purposeful choice. I will give the writers credit for not making the cult a bunch of Harry Powells.

OTOH, they probably should have let an extra connect the song. "Night of the Hunter" is one of my favorite movies of all time. They should have had echo sing Rachel's song.

Oh my lord, no wonder that episode creeped me out from the beginning.

Night of the Hunter is a great movie, also incredibly disturbing.

I'm not familiar with the movie, but the singing and the smiling kind of creeped me out.
I agree it was a plausible use of a Doll; what interested me was the way Echo took control of the situation when creeepy leader decided to burn everybody up; I wondered if her own personality was showing itself.

Check out this write up from The Onion's AV Club which mentions "Night of the Hunter". Good stuff.

INteresting review, with some very good points. One thing I kind of alluded to...

Unlike the reviewer, I'm not entirely certain Jonas didn't have a conversion. Invariably, someone who leads a cell like this - or say, the Dollhouse - falls because they start to believe their own PR.

I thought that's why he'd take Echo in, instead of solely being suspicious. More importantly, and less of a reach, it's terrible politics to turn her away when the rest of the flock believes her.
