Doing a short version of this meme, which I might likely finish answering. Most recently from [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce.

Name a fictional character that I'm familiar with (feel free range far and wide), and I'll tell you:

  1. My favourite thing about that character.
  2. My least favorite thing about that character.
  3. One person I would ship them with in their own verse.
  4. One crossover ship for them I think would be neat.
  5. Something I've made in my head up about that character.

And yes, I still haven't finished the Two Random Characters Crossover and Have Dialog meme, because I fail at writing dialog between Dexter Morgan and Jim Profit. Seriously. It's been a month, and I still haven't gotten past the part where they're just sitting there, looking in the other's general direction, too wrapped up in their own inner monologues to actually speak for more than 5 seconds.

Buffy Summers!

Dang I was going to say that but now I will say Angel.

  1. He's got vision. He sees the Big Picture. A lot of people want to do stuff today, but he's got an eye toward broader goals. As a result, he can serve to not only do good in the short term, but to motivate others. In particular, he's very good at inspiring people to turn themselves around. And he is willing to abase himself and expose his failings if it helps others to see them. On a personality level, he's a "guy". He has incredibly broad ranging interests - both low culture and high culture - he's not particularly apologetic (though he's more likely to get embarassed if people rag on him enough for liking Manilow than the ballet) and he's not political about his tastes no matter whether they're popular or not.

  2. He is a very thickheaded man. For all his big picture vision, he very often loses sight of the day-to-day acts that are required make things add up to the big picture he might like so much. And, though he can be persistent, he's also too quick and too easy to give up on himself or his moral standards if he thinks things will be hard. A lot of life involves unpleasant, repetitive tasks that might not look to get anywhere. Put Angel in such a circumstance, and after a few setbacks, he might well be tumbling back into the gutter.

  3. In his verse, I don't have much long term hopes for Angel & romance as long as he's an immortal vampire subject a happiness clause in his curse. If those weren't a factor, I'd ship him with Buffy. As long as it's a factor, I'd prefer to see him in a more short term, Friend with Benefits kind of relationship.

  4. Amanda Darieux. Immortal, appreciates art, recognizes that redemption quests are meaningful without getting all wrapped around the axle about it. Also, wouldn't be too impressed with him, which is important. Angel would benefit from being involved in a relationship that was more about excitement than Big Drama and he wouldn't have to mind when she inevitably disappears. Granted, dumping a big problem on his head, but he's used to that by now...

  5. Post Series. Sometimes, when he's out with Connor, he has an urge to call up Roger Burkle and ask him what he'd do. Because Roger just seems to have a handle on these things. And plus, Angel finds it strangely comforting when Roger calls him "son".

  1. Her sense of duty. Some people find her bouts of selfishness make her self-righteous when she talks about responsibility... but to me, it's the fact that she genuinely wants a more "normal" life that makes her truly heroic. And that she's not playing at "Hero" because it makes her feel important or good about herself... but rather, that she recognizes what she can do for others, what happens if she doesn't, and can't not be involved.

  2. Her turning down Xander in S1 is about as nice a rejection as anyone will ever get, but her general unwillingess to avoid unpleasant confrontations is something I don't particularly like. In a number of her relationships, she will default into passive states - and a general lack of desire to directly state things if she can put them off. Sometimes it's a function of ambivalence, of not wanting to hurt feelings, or to find out she'd be rejected if people 'really knew what she was thinking/feeling' I'm not quite sure.

  3. I'm less of a romantic about it than a lot of others, but I do like Angel with Buffy - noting that his curse and immortality make this mostly moot. The key thing is... I think he has a far greater understanding of strain her conflict between aspiration and responsibility places upon her than most anybody else does. It's a huge deal for her.

  4. You can ship Buffy with a large number of characters from a number of shows - it just depends if you want to go silly or serious. In silly worlds, I can easily picture her having a brief, yet embarrassing dalliances with John Dorian (Scrubs) or Ted Moseby (How I Met Your Mother). That would amuse me.

  5. Fifty years from now, when someone makes a cutting remark about her intelligence or schooling, she will still be muttering under her breath "I got into Northwestern, you know..."

Faith
Monday, January 21st, 2008 19:20 (UTC)

  1. Her loyalty. Particularly now that she's gotten much better at judging who to be loyal to than she was early in her run as a character. I don't know that you could trust her not to be a bull in a china shop, but you can trust her to have your back. Also, her wicked sense of humor and general zestiness...

  2. For lengthy stretches, her lack of sensitivity and sensibility. Faith had poor judgment, and almost no confidence in her decisionmaking - and thus behaves thoughlessly and is prone to follow whomever would order her with the most unwavering purpose. Even as she's gotten more confident and mature, I think she's still someone who is going to unwittingly step on toes because of her impulsive nature.

  3. As mentioned below, I liked the idea of Gunn/Faith a lot.

  4. I think Faith is someone who could do well relating to a lot of people, because she doesn't have high expectations to meet - (especially now as she's starting to believe she can have her expectations met - which I think she didn't way back when...). I've gone more on the comedic side, and funniest things for Faith involve stories where Faith must seduce someone to infiltrate their organization. For example, Faith must seduce Kenneth the Page as part of a plan to take down the Sheinhardt Wig Corporation. In a more serious verse, she'd have to be dating somebody awesome. I'll have to think more about it.

  5. Certainly, I've shared my opinion that Faith very much the embodiment of a typical Red Sox fan. But only recently started rooting for the Patriots when they suddenly came back into vogue again. And at this point, would have no qualms whatsover breaking up Giselle and Tom Brady, but would also go in for a threesome with him if they were up for that. OTOH, she kind of has a recurring fantasy of running into Derek Jeter and getting all flirty, just so she can reject him. Because he's a Yankee.

Coolness. Faith infiltrating 30 Rock is win.

Have you followed the Season 8 comics at all? I'm not over the moon about them, but you might like the Faith story that should be coming out in paperback soon. (And soon apparently means June? What the hell, marketing department. Anyway.

I hadn't really been following the S8 comics. Presumably, I will let my FLIST summarize when it comes around...

As to... I was mentally cataloging what how some characters would be super-wacky fits on various TV shows. I think Cordy would be a fit on 30 Rock too, except she's dead now...

Actually, given the level of zaniness, you could pretty much imagine any number of ways a character runs into that show.

I mention it because it involves Faith flirting/infiltrating. With an evil Slayer. And then she runs off with Giles. It's kind of great.

Ah. Neat. But there is no Jack Donaghy. Or Jonathan? Heh.

Actually, I'm sure it will be cool. At some point, I will follow up. Maybe during the summer lull between Basketball and Football starting back up.

  1. Usually, Gunn is the sane man surrounded by a sea of crazy. And that he was considerably more shrewd than most people tended to notice.

  2. That he would be prone to losing sight of himself. Generally, he seemed to have strong self-knowledge and self-possession, so it's frustrating when he forgets - see "I'm the muscle" or his S5 need to magically lawyer up...

  3. I always thought Gunn & Faith would be awesome.

  4. I think Gunn is a character who would be highly datable. If he were living in a comedy world, it'd be neat to see him wind up dating Ashley Banks - though he is more a guy she would like than her a girl he'd date... and then he'd be getting inspirational guidance from Uncle Phil instead of thinking "I'm just the muscle".

  5. During S5, repeatedly abused Lorne's connections to meet his favorite sports and movie stars - tries to play cool - but ultimately dissolved into fannish goo (not literally) upon doing so.

John Connor
Friday, January 18th, 2008 05:23 (UTC)

  1. He's the savior of humanity. That, and when presented with a robot assassin charged to serve and protect him, tries to prevent said robot from killing people.

  2. He gets irritating and whiny. In his defense, his world is crazy.

  3. Don't have one.

  4. In fairness, my lasting impression of him is from T2, and I still see John Connor as a 10-year old boy. Can't really ship him.

  5. He can't help himself. He knows Kyle Reese is a good guy, and his dad. But he finds the situation really creepy.

  1. I like most that, despite his protestations of emptiness, he can actually be caring. He's quite good with Rita's kids.

  2. He wraps his deep character flaws under a lot of rationalization, and justification, but he's a murderer.

  3. Rita. Sometimes, they're really sweet.

  4. I don't really see him as very shippable. But Dexter Morgan-Lilah Morgan would probably be very interesting to see.

  5. Is secretly hooked on old Miami Vice reruns, and deeply embarrassed by that.

Okay I'd watch #4 (and granted I don't see him as shippable either) but him and Lilah could be dark fun and I'm thinking anyone who has a Miami Vice vice would be a tad embarrassed

it's the pastels...

Alternately, Dexter/Dru. Crazy English Brunettes are drawn to him...

That would be yet another explosive mix. I like it.

the pastels or the white suits with loafers and no socks

Dexter Morgan-Lilah Morgan

Somehow I never actually made that connection, even when he was dating a Lila in season 2.

*shame on me*

Well, it was sort of random. Just imagining... considering that, on the one hand, W&H defends murders... but on the other hand - most of the people Dexter kills are people who would retain W&H if they could afford to.
