He's the savior of humanity. That, and when presented with a robot assassin charged to serve and protect him, tries to prevent said robot from killing people.
He gets irritating and whiny. In his defense, his world is crazy.

In fairness, my lasting impression of him is from T2, and I still see John Connor as a 10-year old boy. Can't really ship him.
He can't help himself. He knows Kyle Reese is a good guy, and his dad. But he finds the situation really creepy.
