My first thought is to say "so what" and "screw the NCAA". Just cancel all the rules, and let boosters and schools pay the players all they want. Do away with the 'scholar athlete' pretensions at the D-I level.

Yeah, I know. Not gonna happen. Probably a really, really bad idea. But that's me being knee-jerk and not thinking about it.

Yeah, that's part of my reaction too. It's like, why even bother with rules? Last week when [livejournal.com profile] sarakat was visiting me we were discussing college v. pro football and why I like college more than pro. My feeling is that in general, college players do it for the love of the sport. It's not all about multi-million dollar contracts, or fancy cars, or fame, but because they love the game.

Then news about Bush breaks and it reminds me that I can so f'n naive sometimes.

I just. . . if nothing is done to Bush or to USC, it really does beg the question, "Why does the NCAA even bother to have rules and regulations if nothing is going to be done about flagrant violations?" I still love college football but man, it's so easy to get cynical about it.

College athletes are like everybody else. You do what you do because you like it. Because it's fun. Because it might be a career. Because who doesn't like getting a chance to be a hero...

And it's nice to watch it at a level where the NFL hasn't professionalized all of the joy/emotion out of it.

What I learned from working in the Athletic Dept. was that the NCAA is a mess, and sometimes really disconnected with the mission statement. I have no easy solutions.

And look - we scored again. 34-7

Fantastic!

I don't know who I'm pulling for in the Auburn/LSU game. Usually, as long as Auburn isn't playing Alabama, I root for Auburn. However, I have an extremely obnoxious Auburn friend who has been bragging about how utterly awesome they are this season, they could be national champions, have another undefeated season, etc. Which true, but it does sort of make me root for LSU to win just to shut my friend up a bit. *g*

Is the Michigan game on TV?

Michigan is on TV -- because every Notre Dame Game is broadcast Nationally on NBC. Did I mention that we hate Notre Dame and their personal TV deal.

Also they just scored to make it 34-13.

And I have a soft spot for LSU because one of my longtime friends is from Baton Rouge. Take the time to say fie on your hated Auburn foe. I take extra special joy whenever things go bad for Penn State football. I hates them, yes, and I wants them to lose always.

I hates them, yes, and I wants them to lose always.

HAHAHAHAHA, yes. Very true.

I had forgotten about the Notre Dame/NBC deal. I'll have to flip to that game some. I always love when teams get their comeuppances.
