Because I'm like that, I'm posting more stats, this time adding Runs Created. Our team is now 4-0, and I remain blissfully uninjured. Now, I must get to work on the AtS Virtual Season 6 scene with special guest star Rick Fox...

Few things are as fun as the combination of numbers geekery and athletics.

You're not really holding up your end of the bargain here: there need to be more numbers involved here. Where are your fielding statistics?

(Also: the fact that the runs created statistic carried across a team doesn't actually add up to the number of runs scored by a team is a bit amusing, and to me a bit indicative of the wide-spread utility of statistics in the absence of actually watching a game to get a feel for the players -- or maybe something has changed since the last time I watched a baseball game. Are quarter-runs allowed now?)

Defensive statistics are hard to come by in softball. Especially as we didn't have enough players the first week, and only kept the full scorecard for the half-innings when we were at the plate.

the fact that the runs created statistic carried across a team doesn't actually add up to the number of runs scored by a team is a bit amusing, and to me a bit indicative of the wide-spread utility of statistics in the absence of actually watching a game to get a feel for the players

The problem with using 'Runs' in player analysis, is that Runs measures the team rather than a player. Two players who are otherwise identical in every respect will score a different number of runs if they have different players hitting behind them. They will have different RBI totals, depending upon how well the hitters ahead of them get on base. Case in point the Runs/RBI comparison between Sosa and Bonds in 2001 - in which Bonds was the superior hitter but would seem to be a lesser player in terms of Runs/RBI. Why? Even though Bonds performed better in every other measurable category, his teammates performed poorly, giving him fewer chances to score or drive in runs. Though he had a significantly higher percentage of success than Sosa in what opportunities he did have.

The 'Runs Created' statistic isn't actually tied to the runs/RBI statistics. It's tied to the factors by which a individual player performance will correlate to runs being scored - getting on base and hitting for power. And so, RC is actually more a predictor of the runs a player would be expected to contributed based upon their individual performance. (Basically OBP x SLG x AB -- more sophisticated versions account for Steals, Sacrifices, etc...)

And, now that I've corrected the chart to account for the automatic outs we took for not having enough female players on the team in our first doubleheader, the RC actually winds up being an accurate predictor anyway.

RC turns out to be a very effective metric for judging a player at the plate. There's Bill James 'Win Shares' which accounts for defense as well and is considered very accurate, but our 4 game sample size and lack of fielding data render us unable of applying such...
