Tonight is the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, yes, but I will be getting my sporting excitment another way... Yes, it is softball season and Dave is getting it in gear.

Last Thursday, we opened our season by sweeping a double header against Team EDO - a game made more dramatic by the giant mud puddles left by rain earlier in the week. Indeed, the mud was worth two hits for me, as otherwise weak grounders to third were swallowed up in the muck. I did manage one of my customary triples to right - and it would have been a homer too if it hadn't splashed into a puddle and stopped rolling.

More importantly, I didn't injure myself. Perhaps, this is because I am hiding out at first base, where the only challenge is making sure I stand on the base with my rightt foot. (Novice mistake right handed throwers make is stepping on the base with the left foot, which leaves you no reach to catch the ball.) Since I didn't have to throw anywhere other than the pitcher, and didn't have to run either, my body remained safe. We'll see how things hold up today...

And of course, getting all sabremetic with team stats this year...

Cheerleaders. We totally need cheerleaders. And also, another woman on the field.

Go Dave!

(When I was growing up, the neighborhood softball league was the sort where the outfield brought their wine glasses with them when they went out to field -- not their beers, their wine glasses [even if the glasses were the plastic kind]. I want to play in a league like that.)

When I was growing up, the neighborhood league was the sort where it was considered high comedy to get 3-year olds drunk on beer after the game...

Yeah, they did that too, but California style: it's all about the wine. (And then people wonder why teenagers kill themselves driving drunk.)

Your one extra-base hit was a triple? Was that the first hit you got, and you were so tired afterwards that you had to just settle for singles?
Wednesday, July 12th, 2006 13:56 (UTC)
The triple was my second hit... fly ball over the right fielders' head. And actually, I was a little tired, which is why I didn't go for two on my third hit - which was a liner into right center.

My two other singles should have been ground outs to third, except that the infield was all muddy and the balls got stuck in the mud and were unplayable by the fielder.

Whereas, lastnight, after walking twice I singled on a pitch over my head because I at least wanted to swing. BTW, did you check out my 'Lazy Person's Guide to Crossover Concepts' which was two or three entries back?

Yes. There are thoughts forming in my head of how BtVS might have gone had she transferred to The Fresh Prince's school instead, and how Will and Carlton would be her Scoobies. I hate you.

I played softball in college, and got a single because I slipped rounding first and slid a good ten feet out into right field before I finally stopped. This, of course, was the game when the most pretty girls were in the bleachers.
