You've always wanted to write a TV Crossover Fanfic, but you think "How can this be done? TV Shows are so different, and I'm not very creative" Well, intrepid soul, I supply very easy concepts for your very own Crossover.

Dual Identity
Same actor = Same guy. Riley Finn is actually that dude who was the secret service agent in from the "First Daughter" movie with Katie Holmes, and he's totally in disguise. (Thanks [livejournal.com profile] atpolittlebit!)

Family Reunion
Same actor = My identical cousin from Toronto.
Variation: Same actor but shows in different time frames mean ancestor instead of cousin. Like, hey how about that Angel. He sure was a slut back in those boozy Irish days. Logically, Agent Booth must be his long lost secret descendant!

Name’s the Same
Cyclops’ name is Scott Summers. The Bionic Woman was named Jaime Summers. They must be cousins!

New Watcher in One Easy Step
The great thing about the Jossverse Council of Watchers, is that it’s essentially an old-world, conspiratorial, secret society. Any British character with any trace of upper crust association, is potentially tied to the Council of Watchers. Geoffrey the Butler from the Fresh Prince. Higgins from Magnum PI. The West Wing’s Lord John Marbury. (Probably not Bentley, from "the Jeffersons" though.) Sure it’s a secret society, but we’re ready to believe it.

Show Within a Show
Who doesn’t love to meet celebrities? Crossovers can occur as our character visit the set of any TV show which features characters who are actors. (I.e. That Joey/Joey Dawson’s Creek/Friends crossover you’ve always wanted!)

Parent Corporations
Highlander has "Watchers". BtVS has “Watchers”. They’re all the same. See also, Everybody lives/works in New York.

Oh Noes! Somebody Committed a crime!
You can always crossover with a police drama. How hard is it to crossover any show with the innumerable Law & Orders?. See also, New York

Everybody Lives/Works in New York
Given the number of shows set in the Tri-State area, it’s only a matter of time before they meet. Like that night when CBS crossed over all of their sitcoms, granted "Everyone Love’s Raymond" and "King of Queens" were already spinoffs of each other or something…

If you really want to be clever, you can mix a bunch of these elements, such as writing a story in which Tony from "Who’s the Boss" hops a ride in a cab driven by Tony from "Taxi" and then both are arrested by Tony from "Hudson Street". I’m not sure if even Tony Danza himself would read it, but in a world where people write Minesweeper Fanfic... it might already be out there now.

The disgruntled sidekicks lounge
Did you like that episode of Nash Bridges with Tommy Chong and Philip Michael Thomas? Who didn’t? Don’t you just love it when a bunch of second fiddles team up to form their own band?

So here’s a few to get you started… and if you ever get blocked on explaining how or why these people have met, especially if they’re from different continents, time periods, or even radically different worlds, remember you can always just make a portal.

If you were intendeding that dismissively, [livejournal.com profile] yhlee wrote a really good fanfic based on that idea. (Really good in that I've never seen Bones, seeing that it isn't available on any free channel in the UK, so I don't know if that character was well done or not.)

My tastes run too much to the silly for me to dismiss most of these ideas outright. It's more a matter of taking a common premise like that and executing it well. I'm sure someone could write a perfectly fine X-Men/Bionic Woman crossover.

Plus, I have a big soft spot for 'Human descendents of slutty Irish Angel' in speculation. It's just too funny not to consider...

But I really think that you had the whole Riley secret agent thing worked out so it was actually kind of weirdly logical....
And hey, Buffy is a Summers as well....
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:36 (UTC)
That wasn't mine... that was Bit's idea...
Monday, July 10th, 2006 02:27 (UTC)
Ah. Apologies to the brilliant 'Bit.
My bad.
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 22:23 (UTC)
LOL!

Cyclops’ name is Scott Summers. The Bionic Woman was named Jaime Summers. They must be cousins! Hah! And I had the same thought as above, that Buffy is their cousin, as well. I'd read that Summers fic...(Jaime was actually a Sommers, though, and the fact that I knew that without googling is very, very sad. I know have "Feelings" in my head from that one episode where she masqueraded as a Miss USA or something contestant...)

Geoffrey the Butler from the Fresh Prince. The West Wing’s Lord John Marbury. (Probably not Bentley, from “the Jeffersons” though.) Hahahaha! Sadly, any time I hear U.N., no matter the context, I think "Mr. Bentley was a translator there..." I try not to work that into current events conversations, though. Really.
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 22:54 (UTC)
I think Bentley is a disgraced former Watcher, myself.
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:10 (UTC)
He always did have a rogue translator vibe, didn't he?
Monday, July 10th, 2006 02:16 (UTC)
His slayer died, he took to drink, terrible thing.
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:46 (UTC)
Okay, so Bentley's a watcher in NYC. Magical crossover concept: Lionel Jefferson = Robin Wood's dad!!!
Monday, July 10th, 2006 02:14 (UTC)
Bwah!

(And ever so cosmically, I actually had a brief elevator conversation with Paul Benedict many years ago in NYC. So it's kismet!)
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:06 (UTC)
hahaha, see my comment below.

it's like we know each other or something --
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:12 (UTC)
Hahahaha! I broke my Bionic Woman doll's neck trying to get her to make the bionic ear noise.
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:13 (UTC)
that's better than some ways you could have broken it, I guess . . . (not getting into how my friend broke her Mal & Jayne dolls)
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 22:47 (UTC)
Dual Identity: Hee! And don't forget that the President's daughter's name was Samantha, same as the woman Riley married!
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 22:53 (UTC)
Like, hey how about that Angel. He sure was a slut back in those boozy Irish days.

Not exactly a crossover, but have you read Matt's amusing story using that idea?

It's Family Tree, and you can find it here: http://thebuffer.smithereen.net/matt/f_family.html

All those brilliant ideas you've thought up, Dave. How do you do it?
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:40 (UTC)
Oh, I'm very much a fan of Matt's work and that was one of my great faves for chuckles...
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 23:06 (UTC)
Cyclops’ name is Scott Summers. The Bionic Woman was named Jaime Summers. They must be cousins!

Would Buffy also being a cousin be too obvious? ;-)
Sunday, July 9th, 2006 23:07 (UTC)
D'oh! And I see that I'm not the first person to bring that up, either. I should read comments before posting, I really should.
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:48 (UTC)
It's obvious, but we don't need to let that stop us...
Monday, July 10th, 2006 00:54 (UTC)
there's a code problem here, but anyway, this is brilliant.

now i have to be a big old geek and point out that the Bionic Woman was "Jaime Sommers." Also, that we hardly ever see Buffy's father and, apparently, in X-men canon, everybody eventually turns out to be related to Scott whether their name is Summers or not. So, Scott & Buffy as secret cousins not really a stretch. and of course the bionic woman could be a mutant who made a lame attempt to hide her identity (well, not any lamer than Superman putting on glasses)
Monday, July 10th, 2006 01:39 (UTC)
Finally fixed disastrous coding issue... I guess that shows that I don't know my Lindsay Wagner ouvre as well as I thought...
Monday, July 10th, 2006 02:32 (UTC)
They're cousins! Identical cousins!
One pair of matching bookends, different as night and day

Apparently there is someone named Lorne in SGA, so I assume they have "Don't Ask...Don't Sing Karaoke...Don't Pursue". And someone named Logan in Veronica Mars.

OK, I saw the first X-Men movie last night...Rogue/River is like the ultimate for the noglove_nolove barrier protection ficathon, right?
Monday, July 10th, 2006 02:57 (UTC)
yeah, I'm hoping there are Rogue requests on noglove/nolove. I always figured if Logan had liked Bobby more, he might have clued him in that there are things you can do WITHOUT touching skin.

and how about this XM/Firefly crossover -- Wolverine/Badger. (We could AU them both into penguins, for extra confusion).
Monday, July 10th, 2006 03:18 (UTC)
Crow/Toad has a lot of possibilities too.

Is there a lot of Slasher!JeanGray whose idea of a good time is telepathic voyeurism of Scott/Logan scenes, with the occasional telekinetic contribution?
Monday, July 10th, 2006 03:26 (UTC)
"Living time, and the Summers is easy"?
Monday, July 10th, 2006 03:42 (UTC)
Geoffrey the Butler from the Fresh Prince.

I would pay to see a fic where he's actually a watcher.
