I'm really going to become an addict. This trove of videos is just priceless.
Obscure 80s nostalgia popped up again on JA Andande's blog (Adande is a Sports Columnist for the LA Times and former Washington Post NBA Beat Writer) and he recently pointed up a bunch of links to videos.
Among them, El Debarge's video for "Who's Johnny" the theme song from the 1986 movie, Short Circuit. (Experimental military robot is zapped by lightning and gains both consciousness and whimsy) This is definitely something I have not thought about in twenty years.
Contrary to Adande's assertions, Motown must not have been entirely out of budget, because they do have Ally Sheedy in the video. But aside from clips, yeah - no Steve Guttenburg and no more than an arm of Johnny 5.
But I am enamored with the Cheesiness:
1) El DeBarge - man what's that guy been up to?
2) Fashion - What's with what these people are wearing, particularly with Eldra and his hair?
3) The Movie - Man, this was cheesy. And probably very typical of the era.
4) The Song - Oh is this cheesy. I'm not sure if this is about a jealous boyfriend or a robot.
5) The Video - I miss the dopey mock-courtroom genre. It's like "how do we make a video of this stupid song? Let's put our singer on the stand!!! and then we'll use clips, and blow up the judge, and everybody will smile and dance" I think there are about 400 videos that use that formula.
I'm gonna bask in my nostalgia-ness now. Oh, and also work for a living.
