Because [livejournal.com profile] tinpanalley suggested it, and because this dovetails nicely with Today's SI Photo Gallery (College Football's Greatest Plays), I post just for [livejournal.com profile] southernbangel:

George Teague Strips Lamar Thomas(Video)

and

Tyrone Protho's Circus Catch(Video)

However, I'm still cranky, because they put the Bush Push #1, and they don't even rank Nebraska going for 2 in the 1984 Orange Bowl. Or the 'phantom clip' on Rocket Ismail's punt return in the '91 game. Ah well. No list is perfect.

Hahahahaha, this is fantastic, Dave!! I was just talking to someone in the office today about Alabama football and The Catch was brought up. I'm flipping through the SI photo gallery now--whoo-hoo, Teague/Thomas in the Alabama/Miami game was #14. And The Catch was #13. Sweeeeet.

Gah, I cannot WAIT for the season to start!

You do!

You know, I know it wasn't on purpose, but I see a slight in the fact that the first photo is Tommy Freaking Frazier breaking a billion tackles against UF. You had to know that when you talk about college football, I'm going to click. You just hate me. Uh-huh.

Heh. But you can't honestly tell me that wasn't a ridiculously awesome play. I've been having fun for the last half-hour randomly searching YouTube for variou College Football highlights from the last fifteen years.

Oh -- it was amazing. I remember watching it, and just going, "Oh, my God. That -- wait, it's still -- how -- what -- Whoa!" I mean, it was just incredible. I don't think it should be that low in the rankings, really.

I agree with you on the Bush Push -- that is ridiculous to put it #1. That's why I don't like lists. Put the top fifteen in no particular order, or perhaps chronological order. Just make a list of "Plays Always In Discussion For Best Play Ever." That's all that's necessary.

I'm a bit biased to 90's-era FSU/UF/Miami games, personally. Choke At Doke, Wide Right, all of those have plays in them that I would have to put in my list simply because plays are ten times more awesome if you are there in person.

The one thing I won't do, is list a kick as the exciting play. A kick return, a blocked kick, sure. But a kick in and of itself, no matter how important, is just never as exciting. If you haven't seen it in awhile, you should go watch the 'Phantom Clip' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL01ZOCPilI&search=Orange%20Bowl). If you don't remember, it was the 1990 Championship Game between Colorado and Notre Dame, with Colorado (this was the 5th down year) leading by a point with 1 minute left in the game. Rocket Ismail has an amazing kick return called back on a very sketchy clipping call. (And I hate Notre Dame.) Watch it, and tell me if you can see the penalty.

I think my favorite part is the announcer. "I'm sure [he'll] punt out of bounds -- he has to!" is said before the punt even happens. =)

And, yeah, a kick isn't that exciting... unless you're there for the whole drive and you're standing in person watching it happen and feeling the tension build. It's like that first Viniteri kick in the Super Bowl, somewhat exciting to watch on TV, sure, but I bet in person the entire stadium was just on edge.

Yeah, that Bill Walsh knows a little something about football...

That was Bill Walsh? Yeah, I'd say he knows what he's talking about. I mean... why would you punt to one of the most dangerous college returners of all time? That's like punting to Deion when he was at FSU, or Desmond Howard when he was at Michigan.
Friday, May 26th, 2006 12:47 (UTC)
Yup. And if not for the clipping call (photos showed the blocker was even with the defender and hit him on the side, plus it was out of the play) they really got burned. Colorado's punter at the time was Tom Rouen, who's still kicking aroun the NFL somewhere, but Rocket made them look very bad.
Friday, May 26th, 2006 12:56 (UTC)
Oh, yeah, Rocket should've been tackled at the beginning of the play. No question about it. Whoever that was totally botched that tackle.

Also, Youtube has the Desmond Howard "heisman pose" punt return against OSU. Now I'm gonna have to look for FSU Deion highlights.

YouTube is just awesome.
