Does anyone ever just get bored at work and read Random Wikipedia Entries while they're waiting for Congress to do something? Okay, just me.
So I don't know that this is true or anything, but the entry on the TV Series, Dallas, claims that Knots Landing was the initial pitch and that the creator supplied Dallas when the Network said it wasn't good enough. And then got Knots in the backdoor as a spinoff later. That makes me laugh, for no reason.
I still have to admit that I think JR Ewing was one of the most hilarious TV characters ever. You have to love a guy so rotten that when he gets shot, every single other character in the cast has a motive to do it. Also, that show has the most addictive theme music ever.
Da da da da, du du duh duh du da, da da da da da... or, you know, if I had any clue how to actually put out notation for it. Trust me, it was cool...

My memories of that show are so fragmentary, because I wasn't exactly all that old when it was in it's heyday and all, but I used to find it hilarious. Actually, that's not entirely correct. I found Sledge Hammer hilarious. What was great about Dallas was watching my mom and my big sister watch it, and watching their friends go nuts over it. I suspect if I had to watch it now, it might not actually hold up. Which is why I didn't get any of the DVDs for my mom or sister.
But then again, "Profit" held up. Of course, "Profit" couldn't keep an audience through it's pilot. Dallas had 350+ episodes and was basically the number one show for five years, so who knows...

I had a history teacher in the ninth grade from Namibia. He was SO disappointed that we didn't have oil derricks in our backyards or everyone wear cowboy hats. Because they did on "Dallas," you see.
Random Fact: Dallas county is the only county in all of Texas without one drop of oil.

That show is all about crazy misconceptions about Texas. And finding out you're the illegitimate son of the crazy old bastard tycoon who screwed your family, and whose granddaughter you used to boink...
Oh, and I looked on the IMDB page, and they claim John Travolta as JR? I don't know about that. Shirley McClane as Miss Ellie I can buy. Are they seriously gonna make this movie, because if so, it's going to be such a debacle... I can't wait for that.
