Yeah, really. Haven't actually admitted that or discussed it here. I couldn't even quite explain why, beyond I generally stay home on tuesday when it's on.

Ostensibly, the show had a basic premise - two estranged half-brothers wind up playing on the same High School basketball team, where the old man was a HS Legend. Tension and teen drama ensue.

It's not the teen drama, which I don't care too deeply about. It's not really the basketball drama, of which there has been none in the current season. Nor is it realistic - if these dudes were any good in real life, and playing ball in Basketball Crazy North Carolina, presumably they would need some 6'7" dudes or some serious beef on the team to be a state championship contender. And instead of some mumbo-jumbo about basketball champ, there would be AAU coaches and boosters rolling around.

Nah. I watch it, because - and I've now finally realized this - it has a JR. Yeah. I guess this is the male analog of "The Bitch" - quintessentially, Joan Collins as Alexis Carrington on Dynasty. The JR (so taken from Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing on Dallas) is that assy character.

And not just a little assy. The JR is so unbelievably assy that - if he got shot - every single character in the cast would have motive for doing it. Yeah, Dan Scott, is why I bother to watch the dopey show.

Dan Scott. Tortured past. Check. Frustrated dreams. Check. Moments where he acts like a nice person. Check. Money and Power. Check. So there's just enough about the characters where I can believe people would actually be around him. But then he does all the assy stuff that generates the dopey drama that keeps me amused.

Yeah. It's the JR theory. The JR really only belongs on a dopey and trashy show. But that's what makes it a dopey and trashy show that I could actually watch, as opposed to a dopey show I don't watch. Or, as the ratings can attest, the difference between Melrose Place before and after Michael Mancini became a JR.

My world has been rocked on its axis. Say it isn't so!

My husband watches this too and the amount of mocking he's been subjected to has been astounding.

So! Very much so. It is a dumb show. But boy does Paul Johansen's Dan Scott amuse me. I humbly request you give the husband a bit of a pass on this one.

But, isn't everyone allowed their one show that's really quite stupid and crappy? Everyone's got something like that. Even if it's just Wagner.

I should hope. Because, boy - that show is stupid and crappy - but so very amusing.
