Sorry - the "why" got lost. So I'll put it here if that's okay. We have friends who have a lovely vacation home in Mtn Lake Park, MD. It's quaint and quiet and near Canaan Valley ski resort in West Virginia, so we stay there over New Years and ski at Canaan and visit with friends. It's lovely.
Well really, if you like going out and being a crazy person Vegas or New Orleans is the way to go. On the other hand, if you're one of those people who hates his birthday and wishes no one to know it might be better to keep it local.
Of course, you could always take horrible advantage of the fact that it is your birthday and one traditionally considered significant and drag all your friends along to something that only you like but want company for (like an exhibit at a museum only you are interested in) and if they complain guilt trip 'em. And if someone says that they didn't do it to you on their 30th you tell 'em it's their problem and you'd have done it for them.
"Always be sincere. Whether you mean it or not." (Flanders and Swann -- The Reluctant Cannibal)
Or you could ignore me. Really that's probably the best way to go.

There's an interesting question...
