Tourney Pool won by [livejournal.com profile] ladyoneill who correctly selected her Kansas Jayhawks to win it all. Condolences to my Memphis-alum, co-worker Marcus who stayed up past midnight the day before a hearing, watching his team lose. Bummer, dude.

Dramatic, if uneven, title game. Big points go to Kansas for hanging in there and overcoming a nine-point deficit in the final two minutes. Mario Chalmers will probably forever be a hero for his big shot, but to me, the big stars were Darrell Arthur and Sherron Collins for solid play throughout and an absolutely critical steal.

Goat. Because there's always a goat when you lose that lead. Memphis Coach John Calipari. When your team stinks at free throws, it isn't choking when you miss them. OTOH, if your players run out of gas and don't know what to do in the last minute - that's on the coach for breaking his substitution patterns and not calling timeouts. The Memphis player who impressed me the most was Robert Dozier - CDR and Rose were great, but I didn't realize Dozier was that skilled a player.

Also congrats to the Tennessee women for their eighth title. I kind of checked out after Stanford waxed my turtles.

Leatherheads - Not a great, great movie - but certainly a very solid B+ effort. Clooney is excellent at capturing the 1920s-1930s screwball feel, as is Randy Newman's score. Rene Zellwegger, whom I am not always a fan of, played her sass-taliking newswoman with aplomb. As noted by critics, John Krasinski does not hold up strongly next to the other actors (nor does his Carter Rutherford character) - but that was kind of the point... that the corporatization of football necessitated charming rogues like Dodge Connolly getting to get pushed aside in favor of the blander but more broadly acceptable Rutherfords. The guy who can't hold onto his sponsorship vs. the guy on every billboard. Liked it. Think it will still be watchable in ten years, even if not super great.

New Stadium. Went by an open house on Saturday. I think I'm going to like it a lot. Will need a few games before I can compare it relative to new parks like Camden Yards or (This Year's Telecomm Here) Park in San Francisco. Probably not really going to be the traffic nightmare everyone predicted. Although the Papal Visit day is going to blow. I'm gonna hope I can have a light enough schedule to be able to take that day off...

But boy, it's still gonna be a wonder for the Neighborhood. Once hockey and basketball playoffs end, and the weather gets nice, and baseball takes it's turn as the event in town.
