Best friend Jesse from undergrad called to tell me he and his GF of the past 5 years are getting engaged. Has asked me to be best man. This is so very cool.
We roomed together my Junior year at Maryland, after which he ran off to get his PhD in English Literature at Stanford. Last year, he moved to Montreal to finish up his work while she taught at McGill. So, outside of his few trips back home, and one or two visits of my own, and New Year's in New Orleans and a Vegas trip we haven't gotten to see each other all that much. Haven't seen him since the Strokes concert last November. But, he still picked me - which is quite flattering.
Again. I am very excited. Jesse is the coolest guy on the planet and Monique is a wonderful lady; they make a lovely pair, at least from what I've seen of them. And from my conversations with her. Plus she was so wonderfully tolerant for that week I spent with them in SF two years ago. They're a really great couple, although both being non-tenured academics is going to be tough on them. I guess I'll have to start looking to make some notes out of those drunken e-mails from the year he studied abroad in Sheffield. 'Drunk Jesse' was hilarious, and I suppose I'll need to share that with Monique's family.
So anyway, my friends are happy and I am therefore full of much joy.
It makes up for the pesky sore muscles and aching back. I live less than 15 miles from the parent's home, and as my dad is nearing 60, I occasionally swing by to help them with yardwork and such - as I did today.
