Softball season has come to a close, and with it now complete, I will allow myself to visit the doctor. I have to get my knees checked out, and my ankle is tender so I'll do that. Also, there's a bruise on my shin from a line drive that's still discolored after ten days, so I'll probably check on that too.
In additon to my sports related aches and pains, this has been a time when baseball player Rafael Palmeiro got busted for taking Stanazolol, a banned steroid. Palmeiro's situation is made more prickly because he was accused of taking drugs by Jose Canseco and put on quite a show when he categorically denied it before the House Government Oversight Committee. Palmeiro had recently surpassed the 3,000 hit milestone and was closing in on 600 home runes, so this bust throws a serious wrench into his up-till-now lock on the Hall of Fame.
During his prime, Palmeiro was a nice player. His career stats say HoF, and yet there was never a year during his career where he was even the fifth best player in the league at his position. So the drug rumors were a big problem. Added to this, that he was a singles hitter for the first seven years of his career before magically getting power just when steroids took off in the league, that he compiled his numbers playing in three of baseballs four most extreme hitters parks in an overwhelmingly hitter-friendly era...
All of which brought to mind this week's Drabble theme of "Addictions". I mostly was thinking about drugs and slayers. If a bordeline HoF athlete like Palmeiro is taking Performance Enhancing Drugs (and not just the Viagra pills he does ads for) then would a slayer or watcher think about taking them? And if I've got to tape myself up to prevent ankle sprains, what do you do for a slayer before she goes out at night. If I've got sore muscles after only a few innings in the field, how sore is a slayer going to be after fighting all night. It may heal, but it's still going to hurt, right?
So with apologies to those bored by my earlier rambles, and who wanted to skip, here are some modified versions of the Drabbles I posted for this week's
open_on_sunday challenge - themed around Addiction.

Coach started the rituals just a week after he first learned.
At 7:30, she breaks out the razor. At 8 PM, he gets out the tape and gives her a good wrap. At 1 AM, he fills the tub with ice. Every morning, he injects her with the special cocktail.
Maybe he should have more faith. In her. In Slayer healing. Spend less time with those shady guys behind the gym. Spend less money at the sporting goods store.
He's not a bad father. He's sure she understands. He just wants to squeeze one more day out of her career.

The powers are exhilarating. No matter what happens, the wounds always heal. Sprained ankles. Separated shoulders...
Cousin Jimmy played D-I, but arthroscopic surgery couldn’t save his career. Nadine figures she's torn her ACL at least twice. Not that anyone would know. She’s never had an MRI.
Just because the injuries heal doesn’t mean they don’t hurt. The first time, Nadine crumpled in a heap and howled at the moon so loud she could've called a wolf pack.
That's why she fucks a remarkably unethical dentist. And a pharmacist. And a rep from Eli Lilly.
You can't always walk them off.

So then, what are our Buffyverse characters addicted to? Giles and Lorne sure do drink a lot... We have suspicions about Xander and his twinkies. We know about Vampires and hair product. But is Angel secretly addicted to 1980's era cheesy ballads - such prom staples as Mike Reno & Ann Wilson's duet, "Almost Paradise". Was Mayor Wilkins a golf addict? Did Fred ever miss an episode of Sabado Gigante? Exactly how much time has Faith been spending with her new George Forman grill, and can it possibly be healthy?
Questions, comments, suggestions...
