I hate that the first night of Hanukkah fell on a Friday, as it meant I had to give up wacky night out fun for the big Friends & Family gathering at the homestead, wherein I must hear the same stories over and over again. And yet, good times were had.

So. Hanukkah is not a particularly important Holiday. There's a story about the oil that never runs out, and some sweet, sweet dreidel action. But really We just care about scoring.

And he wins:

1. Massaging/heating neck pillow. Yours truly spends much time on the PC and has creaky joints. Much appreciated.

2. Sweaters and fine shirts. Differing shades of blue and some charcoal grey. Cause yo' - Bobbie the styling consultant was quite clear that blue is my color.

3. New baseball caps to replace the aging and grodier members of my collection.

4. Dope-ass Saute pan. For when I've got needs the Foreman Grill and the Barbeque can't handle. No more reliance on my dinky-ass skillet. I am pleased.

5. A fancy Cheese serving set. WTF? Clearly, the bright idea of one of the women. Because, really. I don't often have people over. And the people I have over don't do the fancy cheese thing. Or the fancy serving set thing. It's more like the "beer and pretzels and where are the damn poker chips, bitch" thing. I have no use for this, but must pretend I love it. Look, I like cheese and all. But, last year they got me the fancy Delft Cheese slicer and grater set from Holland.

6. Indiana Jones DVD Collection. Fullscreen. Something will have to be done about that. I like the movies. Am happy to have them. But I did not drop what I dropped on my entertainment center to watch movies in non-Widescreen formats. I am such a snob.

7. Cash Money. $$$$$$ My favorite. I guess I'll have to buy some damn Gouda.

8. Socks. 8 Pairs. Thick and warm. It wouldn't be Hanukkah without them.

At some point, I will post my thoughts on Return of the King. Still processing. Probably going to see it again first. Also - will have to yap with Doc Flieger, because I think she's working on another book about the professor and I'm curious what she will add.

on a completely unrelated note, I've been thinking about your post on souls and redemption and vampires etc. While I was reading it, I felt that it was off somehow, but it took me awhile to pin point how exactly. I think I have it now, but I just don't have time to discuss. so maybe later if you're interested and I remember.

too bad you don't like fancy cheese parties, but still, loot is always good.

I have yet to see Return of the King, but everyone else on my friends list has now seen it.

Must put that on my to-do list before I get spoiled!

The boat sinks.

so maybe later if you're interested and I remember.

Feel free. I posted with the intent of folks more detail-oriented to chop it to shreds anyway, so I've no objection to any critique you might have.

I never said I disliked fancy cheese parties per se. I did go to Grad School in Ann Arbor after all. I just don't like hosting them. I host poker & sports gatherings with Nachos and hot wings.

Happy Hannukah to you and yours!

Sounds like you scored, though I feel you on the fullscreen issue. That's a bummer.

I'm looking forward to your comments on RotK, though I have not seen it yet. A friend of mine went to see it on Tuesday, along with FotR and TT, at this special screening. I considered it, but that's twelve hours in theater seats and I just didn't think I could take it.

Enjoy your holidays!

Thanks. And yeah. The Marathon movie watch is not my thing. Or rather - it's not my thing to do that in a theater. We had many weekend-long movie festivals in college.

Does that mean that I've been defriended? ;-)
(for clarification because of the recent journal happenings, that was a joke)

My husband got to see all three the evening they premiered. Actually, I kicked him out of the house and made him go see them that night. He is a huge Tolkien fan. We have the Red and Green books (the leather bound editions of LoTR and The Hobbit). We have the silly bookends that came with the DVD for FoTR. They were the only non-Christmas doo-dads that stayed out when I cleared everything to make room for the Christmas decorations. I'm going to put a tiny wreath on each of their outstretched hands. He even has read the Annotated Hobbit (well, he has fallen asleep with it on his lap many times).

I'm more a CS Lewis fan. We have an interesting dynamic, similar to theirs.

Happy Hanukkah to you! I know it started yesterday, but better late than never to wish somebody a good holy day, right? God bless you and your family and friends :)
Saturday, December 20th, 2003 17:49 (UTC)
Happy Hanukkah! It sounds like your family is very into cheese. Very waspy of you!

[I wish you lived here! I bought a male co-worker the most horrendous looking dreidel cookie jar (enormous, ceramic bliss). A fine addition to any home. I was going to buy my friend Robin one but I'm afraid she'd feel obliged to use it and it is just too ugly to do that to her. It's more a manly gift anyway. Perfect for a poker game.]

In any event, Have a good 8 days.

Yeah. I don't want to be that guy, but I think I kinda am.

That's probably very cute to see.

Why thank you. Happy holidays to you and yours as well.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to you and yours as well.

I'm very much not one for nesting or decorative-anything. I still have framed prints that I've yet to hang in the three years I've lived in my town-house.

It is so terribly obvious that I don't have a woman living with me, and probably why all the women in my life constantly get me decorative stuff I am far to lazy and uninterested to display.

Maybe the women in your family want you to get married. Maybe they believe you could meet and marry a great girl if only you had the right cheese serving products. I can see the thought process...

(dream sequence)

December 2002

"Our dear David. Already he should be married. I don't know *why* he's not. He's just perfect. Great job, he's a gorgeous boy. Who wouldn't want to marry him?"

"Well, [insert name], he really has no cheese serving products. I read in Good Housekeeping that the key to a woman's heart is cheese. I know I *love* cheese. Do you think we should get him some cheese serving products?"

"Oh yes."

****

December 2003

"I don't understand it. Our beautiful boy is still single. Who wouldn't want to marry him?"

"Maybe the grater wasn't enough. I mean, who serves grated cheese alone? How many tacos can one eat? And tacos aren't kosher so he can't eat them anyway? Do you think he's eating tacos?!!!!"

"Now, just calm down. He's not eating tacos. Our beautiful boy would never do that. *But* clearly he needs more cheese serving products. What about a whole plate/knife situation?"

"Ooo. And I could give him cash to buy cheese. It's perfect!"

***

I could go on but I'm beginning to scare even myself! Take care and don't mix meat with dairy and it'll all be okay!

I rarely ever see movies the night they premiere. I hate crowds, fighting for tickets, finding out after you got there thatyou have to go to the next show two hours later, etc.

The couple times I have seen a movie the day it premeired lately, I was on vacation and saw the matinee.

One movie I did stand in line for was the original Star Wars movie way back when, but hey, I was 13 and had stood in long lines for worse!
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 07:12 (UTC)
Hmmm... vague much?
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 07:21 (UTC)
I don't just hate crowds. They start to trigger icky feelings. I don't like going to the movies much either. It wasn't until this summer that I figured out that both things were related to PTSD. I just can't handle the stimulation. The wires in my brain are all crossed. I don't have flashbacks any more, but I still get feelings that things aren't right.

I never liked lines. I have this thing about wasting time. I don't like to do it. Movies have gotten so expensive, especially when you factor in a baby sitter and I prefer to just cuddle on the couch. I'd rather rent most things.

This week we rented "Down with Love." I thought it was great. I chose it because my parents were here and I suggested that my dad and Hubby take the older to a hockey game. That left Mom and me alone (bad idea) once the baby went to sleep. I wanted something the guys wouldn't see and this has Renee Zellwiger and Ewan McGregor in it. It was very well done I thought. I loved everything about it and they both get to sing/dance at the end. I've seen it three times, but it has to go back today. It's hard to talk about without really ruining it, but I would love to find someone to talk with about it.
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 07:27 (UTC)
I hear you about crowds. I can feel fine (no claustrophobia) in a small elevator, but put a few people in it, and I have an anxiety spell. It's not just the smaller space, because I'll feel fine in the same small elevator full of equipment.

"The Boat Sinks" is my father's standard movie spoiler joke, stemming from the time my mom bugged him about seeing "Titanic". I've adopted it...
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 08:27 (UTC)
The worst time recently was Hubby's "good" idea to see the Goo Goo Dolls on the beach. We got there very early to get a good seat (they are one of my favorite bands and my daughters love them as well). After it got dark and they were about to take the stage, I turned around and noticed how many thousands of people were there. Luckily the kids needed my attention, so that took my mind off things. After we left, it took me a while to recover.

Small spaces don't bug me either. People smushed together, bumping and stepping on things does. All those arms and legs and bodies. Too much to watch.

I like to decorate with stuffed animals. On top of the Entertainment Unit we have a nice stuffed animal of Frosty the Snowman. I have two, but the girls have claimed one to play with. They won't let me have the Sesame Street or other Muppet ones to decorate with. When they go to bed, I reclaim them and have them sitting in the rocking chair looking at the Christmas Tree.

The wreaths were easy to make. I just took green pipe cleaners, cut them, bent them into shape and put tiny bows on them. The statues are in between the stocking hanger. I need to find a better one for the baby. It says "Baby's First Christmas," but she is on her third. Not really a baby any more, but she is the younger, so she will always be the baby.

Happy Hanukkah and Happy Chrismukkah and all that good stuff.

:)
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 23:21 (UTC)
So let me guess... "the king returns?"
Sunday, December 21st, 2003 23:51 (UTC)
He sure does. Also, there will be some Legolas with his shiny, shampoo commercial hair.

Loyal, groveling, heroic, and with a cute barmaid on my arm.

Plus a director of an Angel episode on my credits.

Updated news. Have returned in favor of Widescreen version. Am happy now.
