Have the king of horror for Friday the Thirteenth. This is probably one of King’s more controversial quotes and often misinterpreted too but regardless, editing is important. I wish I enjoyed it more. It was funny one of the author’s group on that zoom meeting prefers editing to drafting, complete opposite of me.

Word faulted out HARD on me today. Lost a lot of what I wrote for the finish of the story. I recreated it but it’s not nearly as funny as the original. And then when it saved, Word put it under a complete different file name which thankfully I had posted that story so I could retrieve it. Sigh.

It's my parent's 60th wedding anniversary. They were supposed to go somewhere. They're still here. Ah well. Happy anniversary anyhow mom and dad.

I started glut exercises with those crap therabands. I knew I had lost strength but not this much. Also it's causing serious pain in my knee. I'm not sure why. Will need to research that

And it's community rec thursday (as usual these are mostly one Dreamwidth)

[community profile] comment_bingo is open. Get a bingo card. Comment to fan creators. Make their day.

[community profile] summerofthe69 is open with their first prompt. If you like writing 69s, by all means join the party.

[community profile] summer_of_giles is open but using last year's mode, no actual assigned dates. If you like creating for Rupert Giles now is your moment.

And this one is for Pride. Check out [personal profile] reviews_and_ramblings This is a LGBT book review blog and the person running it has been reading tons and tons of boy's love stuff from Japan, China and Korea and I know there people on my list who might like to take a peek at that.

And this is not on DW. A million lives recovery You may have heard of this where a lot of authors were scammed by a so called book festival. Many were left in debt. That link will take you to affected authors, find new authors, get new books, help someone.

I'm annoyed right now. My computer glitched badly with Word. SOmething wasn't saved and I had to restart the computer. Even more annoying I could have sworn I saved that file in two places before stopping for dinner and the two places have two different versions (didn't save at all in one place)

So I went to pick up an ungodly amount of meds from the cvs near the parents' they texted me yesterday about 2 that it was too early to fill. I get there and get the others but NOT my toujeo insulin. Where is this?
CVS - um it's on hold
Me - you texted me about everything else why not this?
CVS - we don't know
Me - WHY is it on hold?
CVS - you have to get in another line to ask that question

Me- goes to other line, muttering

CVS - we don't know WHY it's on hold
Me - is it covered because my insurance keeps threatening to kick this one out of formulary.
CVS -yes, we can fill it now or do you want to come back?
Me - i live 18 miles away. FILL IT (took them over an hour to manage it which should be a good thing because they didn't have the humalog yesterday. You know the most common insulin out there)

I keep saying I'll be doing a pride month book rec and I keep failing so here have all the LGBT books I've read this year (amazon links, no covers because I'm tired and in pain)

Books:

Under This Red Rock YA, horror/mystery, heavy on mental health issues

Disco Witches of Fire Island magic realism 1980s so this is steeped in both the casual sex scene and the horrors of the rise of AIDS (so this is not really a happy story)

Graphic Novels

Carmilla: The First Vampire Chinese-American retelling of Carmilla (in two volumes)

The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich fantasy rom-com

here.Les Normaux: A Dark and Dreamy Tale of Forbidden Love, Dare to Be Seduced by the Supernatural (Les Normaux, 1) supernatural romance webtoon

Earthdivers, Vol. 1: Kill Columbus

If you have questions or want to chat about any of them please do

What I Just Finished Reading:

The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan PI mystery very much enjoyed this (no having the sleuth do something stupid to get in danger!)

West By God - horror, this was...honestly it could have been a journalist mystery without any supernatural elements and been better for it.

What I am Currently Reading:

Anima rising - a good reads Frankenstein retelling giveaway win but also real person fanfic of Klimt and others and so far it's not great.

Dark Entry - a short suspense/horror novel I got last year

A Spell to Wake the Dead - a YA horror arc that is...good but man one of the main characters I want to drop in the ocean

What I Plan to Read Next: Something for the popsugar challenge probably or one of the books I won from Goodreads

Somewhat sleep deprived, but hanging in there?

I'm still in a reading slump. It may be somewhat affected by the amount of technical information I have to read at work daily on a computer screen. Very dry technical and legal information. Things like how many cubic yards of Permeable low-density cellular concrete (PLDCC) is required for a job, and what a credit should be in cost savings for not installing that many cubic yards. Add to that contractual information, which is a lot less interesting than the technical data, not to mention editing financial documentation and legal documentation.

Yeah, that may have an effect. And it probably explains why I am doing lots of fantasy audio books. Finished Crooked Kingdom - the sequel to "Six of Crows", which was a long, but ultimately satisfying conclusion to Six of Crows. I kind of fell for Kaz Brekker and Inej. The others, I was ambivalent about. Similar to the television series Shadow and Bone, actually. Although I think it would have been better if it had just focused on the Crows. The audio book works because it has different narrators for each characters perspective in the books, of which there are eight, two villains. Some are better than others - the Inej narrator is by far the best, and I kind of wish they were reading Kaz's pov instead of the guy reading Kaz's.

Struggled to find something to follow it with. Tried Peter Watts Blindside, a sci-fi novel about a group of oddities who are sent into space to confront an alien presence. Part philosophy, part morality, part hard sci-fi. It was dirt cheap, but also hard to listen to. The Narrator is good, but it's not holding my attention. Nor did Susannah Clark's follow up her popular novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel (which I also tried to read, gave up on, and watched the mini-series instead), Piransi. What is it about? I have no idea, I gave up after two chapters. Here's what I found on Google: Read more... ) Which I guess explains why I gave up on it? My brain has no room for it.

Finally decided on Graphic Audio Dramatization of another of the Kate Daniels novels, which basically have an entire cast - it's like listening to a radio play of your favorite books. And I've forgotten most of the story by now, so...

These are rather cheap - just cost me $9.99 a month. Because I have a subscription and with that you get a credit each month, and I had about five credits. So, I have about fifty books to listen to, plus free podcasts, etc.

Am plodding my way through Remarkable Creatures - I don't get why people recommended it as delightful and funny, and a happy book? Right now, it's very depressing, no one is happy, all the characters are trapped, frustrated, angry and lonely, and it just keeps jumping points of view. I thought it would just be two points of view? But noooo, it's about four to date. It may be more. Each time I think it's done with character pov, it adds another one. (Reminds me of Eternity Station in that respect, also GRR Martin). And outside of Tova and the octopus, I'm not really interested in them, and want to go back to Tova and the octopus. I've decided that maybe Cameron is Tova's missing son, but that doesn't quite work, so maybe not.
Look, I don't need to read a book - to get frustrated, trapped, angry and lonely...or mundane. Escapism it's not. We'll see how long I stick with this.

I'd read the Faire Folk book - but it's bigger, and not an e-book, so not conducive to reading on subways.

After all that rain. I even sat outside and worked some. Tried to garden but the empty pots were filled with spiders and bugs and I ran away. I shall try again another day. Zucchini and me and spiders don't mix.

I've also been learning odd things lately like in my search for things to do in Kansas City MO (for my conference next year) I was nosing about a historic cemetery and found this lady. I am always interested in the women who went up the ranks from prostitute to madam to one of the richest women in town, like Madam Dufran in Deadwood SD. Well meet Leannah Loveall She had the same career path as Dufran and something amuses me about a prostitute named Loveall. If I wrote that people would be annoyed at me being clever.

Also I'm reading a book with the tag line Klimt, Freud and Jung meet the bride of Frankenstein (Anima Rising) it's not what I was hoping for (I have a love/hate relationship with professional RPF usually falling on the hate side) but it mentioned Felix Salten, the author of Bambi, is now considered the probable author of Josephine Mutzenbacher or The Story of a Viennese Whore, as Told by Herself , a famous early erotic novel (not one I've read and I've oddly read a lot of these things, none of which that were very good IMO)

So my brother calls me yesterday to tell me it's my turn to rent a cabin in the Hocking Hills (he did it last year for the group) and he has the perfect one for me to rent because I love caves. He said he'll kick in 100$. It's 1600/night....dream on, bro but man, it's something. Check it out

I am a bit tired so I'm pushing off my fannish 50 women of fandom til friday. Instead I'm going to fall back on a fannish 50 standard for me: the fan animatics.

Satana came out with a new one for Hazbin a few weeks ago (but YT just recced it to me) and they have another one to the song ricochet by starset. The new one is to Paranoid DJ's fan songs for Hazbin. I've recced their work before. This song Get Hooked is not my favorite by them but I love that DJ experiments with style. This one has a mumble rap feel which is what I don't like because the lyrics are very hard to hear over the unbalanced instrumental but the animatic is pretty amazing. Satana does not make Angel smooth around the bend like a Ken doll like so many fan artists do. He's decidedly male.

Warning BOTH animatics have Angel Dust in his drug-addicted, sex worker role (including pole dance/stripping) and the allusion to sexual assault is very apparent. His and Val's relationship is a toxic abusive mess. This doesn't shy away from that. (Honestly as prudish as YT is getting i'm surprised they haven't been hidden)

I really liked this writing prompt. I may actually noodle with it.

Finished my next [community profile] getyourwordsout Yahtzee story. Another 2477 words, most of it the brothers still fighting. (eye rolls) also got about 1060 on my original cryptid story only to learn I lost my cryptid source link. Whee.

Mostly wrote and then had a surprise writers zoom meeting because I forgot we weren't doing them thursdays any more due to conflicts in half our schedules. I didn't do well but mostly because some fool lost the link to the big bad Pennsylvanian cryptid she wanted to use. Sigh. I could NOT find it again. I found the others I wanted to use as red herrings.

Still having blood sugar issues. Today's breakfast sent it almost to 400. By lunch I hit a critical low and then I knocked my damn monitor off again.

two hours later the monitor covers arrived from Amazon. In ONE day. I'm so not used to that (even Prime will not guarantee 1-2 shipping in my area).

Also in there was a book I ordered on Italian healing herbal meds and folklore/paganism. I've been testing herbs from other people's culture and looking so long at UK/Viking paganism because all I could find on Italy was Raven Grimassi who I did not like. I'm excited for this.

Let's share our music! It's music monday. I'm still doing the alphabet challenge and I'm up to J. I'm only doing the last 5 years but you can share whatever. This was not a good letter so I'm not even cutting it because there are so few. Also YT was on fire with recs today. Lately it's been doing nothing but AI music which is a no (even if it's fan tracks. I'll listen to it if the fan wrote the lyrics but otherwise not so much) I have several new bands to follow.

Before I get into my writerly ways let me just say, diabetes is going to steer me around the bend. Today I was bad. I ate fries for lunch and pizza for dinner. My sugar is 90. Two days ago I ate nothing but proteins and my sugar was 360.... WHY?

So into the writing crap. I have been thinking about timing of scenes this week. Early this week I watched The Night House and finished reading The Witch's Orchard. Let me start with House. This was a horror movie and without spoiling too much, she is learning terrible things about her dead husband (while dealing with what she thinks is his ghost). After learning this, when the ghost wants to get frisky, she's into it.

And I'm thinking what woman who learns her husband might have been murdering women who look like her is going to want him touching all over her? Had this scene come before she learned this about her husband, maybe it would have hit they way they wanted it to (unless disbelief was their goal)

Same thing with Orchard, it went a place SO many stories have gone. The protagonist nearly gets killed, does get injured and then in spite of having her leg torn open and breaking in meth lab explosion fumes, feels like having sex. If there is one thing you'll see in my sex scenes, they don't tend to come after times like this because it makes no sense to me. I suppose the whole 'nearly died celebrate life' thing is a trope. It's just one that has me rolling my eyes. Having had some serious injuries, I can tell you sex is the last thing on my mind in those times.

In my novel (still need to get more betas on this) I DID mess up the timing. I ended up having to reorder things and expand some of the beginning in order for the timing to not feel off.

How do you handle timing? Do you find timing issues that bother you?

Abney Park did an acoustic online concert tonight, in part because the lead singer's daughter was in a serious hit and run earlier in the year, the guy drove off and she and her friends ended up with serious, slow to resolve concussions. In the last few concerts they had other people running the lights/sound etc instead of her but she wanted to help again so they did acoustic so she could handle the sensory input.

Regardless, it was one of their better concerts. Occasionally the sound mix gets off but this more simple concert that didn't happen. It really sounded great.

I also went to the Italian deli today for some good gabagool and the pasta that doesn't jack my sugar up. Went to a non-associated Italian restaurant which was good but SLOW.

Visited my cousin in her assisted living home which has taken a serious downturn since Christmas. At Christmas it was clean and neat. Today the place reeked of piss so bad I was glad we were sitting outside. It got worse at dinner so I think some of that are the elder wandering around in wet adult diapers because damn. (not a surprise these places are criminally understaffed)

something stole one of my tomatoes and one flower. Didn't bite them off or anything. They're just pulled up and are gone. I'm unamused.

CNN Aired An Exclusive Live Broadcast of the Broadway Play: Good Night and Good Luck - adapted for the stage from the film of the same name. The reason they aired it is made clear upon the airing - at the very end, Edward R Murrow, the CBS News See it Now broadcaster who famously took on McCarthy, during the Black List and McCarthy Hearings, stands front and center in front of a screen displaying multiple screens of the news. He states in a halting speech, enunciating each word, with a slight tremor to his voice, "we've seen what happens when power goes unchecked, that's not the question before us now, the question is - what will you do about it?"

I was thinking as I was watching it live on MAX (I no longer have access to CNN), that evil is like a spider, sitting in the dark corner of the room, smoking a cigar, wih a red top hat and tails smirking. And asking in a whisper of a voice, low and barely audible, "what do you want?" And indicating with a smile - "come into my parlor my dear and I shall give it to you, with a price of course".

It's insidious, and shadows egos. Self-importance. Self-righteousness. Power. Fame. Fortune. Wealth. Beware the righteous, and the self-important, and most of all the arrogant and narcissistic hunting awards and acknowledgment and power.

I don't know what I personally can do to check the power or stop it. I've been pondering it. I can write, I can post, I can draw, I can paint, I can do my job at a public agency. And I can hope people listen.

People aren't very good at listening? Have you noticed that? Too busy thinking about themselves or what they are going to say next or how they'll respond. Too filled up with thoughts to hear...ones that lie outside of their own minds and brains. I tell people a story and they tell me their own back again, and mine....slides off unheard, lost somehow within theirs? The meaning gone. And they tell me theirs and I tell them my own, and it happens all over again from the other side - with their story being lost.

I did social group therapy once - and we were for the most part forced to listen, but everyone tended to flounder at it. Either they'd ask pointed questions, correct the person's choice of words or syntax or speech (which isn't listening by the way - it's judging, and helps no one), interrupt, direct the conversation to themselves, provide advice, try to fix whatever it was, dismiss it as already solved or playing the victim, but seldom did they listen.

And once on a fan discussion board - we fell into a discussion about writing carefully, and I thought - no that's not the problem here or not that alone, we also need to learn how to read carefully. And people don't? Too busy reading quickly, flying through or past the text, to see it clearly let alone truly comprehend it? Now, for example, raise your hand if you just skimmed this passage and oh so many others? Be honest? How many have you skimmed, jumping over words and phrases and reacting to a sentence here or a paragraph there - but not seeing the whole? I know I do. Try a little experiment, if you will? Read just one paragraph of a post, or the unhidden bit. Then take a moment, and read the rest later, has your opinion of it changed?

We live in an age of content overload, and we surf and read and look at so many things simultaneously. Texts fly by. Our memory of them fleeting or garbled. And more often than not - people just read blurbs. If I post something with information below a "cut tag" - how many will read what's below the tag, and just respond to the top of the post? Losing the point of it. Or respond to the post, without reading the comments below? We don't read carefully - and most mistakes are made because of it. They were on the discussion boards. 90% of the arguments online are the result of "miscommunication" or the inability to politely ask for clarification prior to snarking, judging or condemning.

I think the flaw in the human brain is a tendency to assume everyone thinks the same and perceives things the same? When no one does? And well...a failure to communicate as a result?

**

You'll have to excuse me, I'm exhausted. But the weather is shifting, and I'm hurting less all of a sudden - which means the arthritis isn't being pinged by the human weather vane.

I'm also frustrated with my fellow humans. And perhaps with myself and my own limitations. And a touch depressed, no more than a touch, as a result. But hey at least I don't hurt as much as last night. So maybe the back brace is helping?

It's a warm spring evening. The sky has cleared of clouds, and it's sliding towards dark, from twilight. Nine PM on the East Coast. But I can still see puffs of cloud moving slowly across the pale blue sky, lit from within by moonlight. Our swiftly turning planet in the vacuum of space, surrounded by stars and galaxies which far too many of us take for granted as we bumble upon it babbling and gurgling at one another as is our way.

Since nothing interesting happened today have stories. Look I finished my [community profile] intoabar story. I'm not as happy with it as I was the one that came before it last year but it's still fun

Title: Somebody’s Eyes

Fandom: Hazbin Hotel/The Owl House

Character/Pairing: Edalyn Clawthorn/Raine Whispers, Angel Dust/Husk, Charlie Morningstar/Vaggie

Summary: Edalyn decides to take Raine and Lilith through the portal to revisit the people she met at the Hazbin Hotel on her last visit. They have even more fun than last time.

Rating: teen and up

Author Note - Written for my into a bar challenge for 2025. My challenge was exactly the same as last year so how could I not write a sequel? My challenge was Eda Clawthorne goes into a bar and meets... Niffty (Hazbin Hotel)! And if you want to see last year’s story (they’re stand alones but if you want to, please do) head here to read To Travel is To Live

Also written for the lyrical titles album challenge 2025 using the Footloose album and the song Somebody’s Eyes by Karla Bonoff. (I was thinking of all the eyes on things in both fandoms. I admit it, it’s a lame title).

Also written for spikesgirl58’s six word challenge. The six words were Repeat, Amuse, Official, Sword, Captivate, & Reform and for the allbingo prompt of Nonbinary

Thought another writing prompt would fit the bill.

I was gone most of the day. I did work on my [community profile] intoabar story, got about 870 words. Had hoped to put it out of its misery but no such luck.

If I've missed you on the tally let me know. Feel free to jump in at any time.

The day was broken up into car maintenance, casino time and a webinar for data literacy by the Howard's Hughes Medical Institute. Two were boring but necessary.

The casino however, was better than expected. At first I was losing like there was a hole in my pocket. Finally found the Lucky 8 machine that I liked last time, every 8th spin it gives you all the wilds you hit in the previous 7 wins. I do good on these and made back the 60 I lost and got to 10 over. Mom was 100 over. We decided to go home and while I was waiting on mom who was in the restroom I found the haunted house machine. I love this older machine at my casino. Two spins, hit the bonus, won another 50$. whee. Would have won more but this machine is SO old that the bonus touch screen was dead and I couldn't select half the offerings. Ah well.

I think I recced some of these communities before.

Another big day of editing. I got a chapter ready for my online writers critique group. I managed to get 750 words into my [community profile] intoabar story. It wasn’t easy. I have the exact same prompt as last year which was a lot of fun last time. The Owl House/Hazbin Hotel crossover was surprisingly popular and I was happy to repeat it until I remembered how I struggled last year too. I got Niffty for the Hazbin crew. I am not great at writing her and to be honest, she’s not really a well developed character but also not a blank slate either.

Speaking of blank slates, I’m onto the Arackniss story of my Yahtzee attempt for [community profile] getyourwordsout, got 560 words in so all in all a good writing day.

I was thinking about real life experiences that would NOT make believable characters (cause I'm living with it right now)

For example this home HOW much money do you need to get your curtains to be an exact match to your wallpaper? Someone needs this in a story. Surely this is the beginnings of a haunted house

What I Just Finished Reading:

Under This Red Rock - Mindy McGinnis - it didn't end like I thought it would so I was happy. Still this is a heavy book

The Smoke in His Voice - good story lost in the world's worst grammar/sentence structure. the editing is absolutely rubbish.

What I am Currently Reading:

The Witch's Orchard by Archer Sullivan PI mystery and it is very good so far.

West By God - horror

Anima rising - a good reads Frankenstein retelling giveaway win but also real person fanfic of Klimt and others and so far it's not great.

What I Plan to Read Next: Something for the popsugar challenge probably or one of the books I won from Goodreads

Never thought of it that way but it's a great way of looking at it.

So how it is going? Day three was all about editing for me. I got my original short in shape enough for the beta reader to look at it.

I was interviewed by Kandisha Press who features women horror authors. It was fun.

I was left in Costco barely supervised. Dear credit card, we're sorry.

I've been meaning to do this, Pride month recs. Check out [personal profile] duckprintspress. They have SO much good stuff (including a reading challenge on storygraph.

It was 60 degrees yesterday. 90 today. I am not amused.

And for fannish 50, I'm continuing with the ladies of fandom. Hazbin Hotel has a lot of ladies (maybe even more than the men, actually no I think it is more). However, a lot of them aren't that well developed (yet), Sera, Emily, Lute, Lilith, Rosie, Velvette, Cherri and Carmilla would be the major secondary characters, most only appearing in an episode or two. Rosie is one of my favorites but she is pretty much a blank slate.

That leaves me with the main three, Charlie, Vaggie and Niffty. While Niffty is good comic relief but again there isn't much to her. Vaggie and Charlie are the best developed of the ladies and I am going with Charlie for this.

Charlie is a great character really. She is the eternal optimist but she's also painfully naive and pretty damn clueless. She means well but doesn't have the tools to necessarily do well. She is about the only person who believes that hell is meant to help rehabilitate the sinners and send them to heaven. Finally after being out of touch with her mother for several years, and having zero support from Lucifer, Charlie opens up one of his rundown properties, the Happy hotel, to start trying to redeem sinners.

When she finally gets two sinners to try and redeem, it's obvious Charlie is in over her head. She doesn't understand people. She concocts a lesson plan that villainizes everything that makes Angel Dust Angel, praises Pentious for embracing the role play while totally missing the pain on Angel's face.

But she can learn. She realizes the mistake she made in trying to help Angel with Valentino only we do wish she had corrected that mistake more violently (but then we'd not have Valentino down the road and we couldn't have that). She is forgiving (of her father, of Vaggie) and she is capable of violence when necessary (while apologizing for it). She fights for those she loves and she fights hard and that's what I love best about her (I wish she were easier to write for me)

Today, I wandered through the Urban Farm at the foot of Manhattan, in Battery Park. I also sat in the park on a chair on the grass beneath the trees, watching children play. It was a beautiful day, with a slight haze, most likely from the Canadian Wild Fires in the North.

It was a frustrating day, so I needed a break from it. As tempting as it is to regale you all with the details? I'll refrain.

Some bad news? Dochawk, you may or may not remember him from the ATPO_BTVS and ATS Fan Discussion Board? His two female cousins were victims of the flame-thrower attack in Boulder, Colorado. Read more... )

I'm trying to ignore the news for the most part - but keep stumbling upon it, whether I want to or not. Thank you, information age.

Been comforting myself by watching and listening to James Marsters Q&A's on youtube. I have a serious crush on that actor. I have crushes on several actors. Cillian Murphy is another one, so too is Hugh Jackman, Robert Downy Jr, David Tennant, Claudia Black, also Juliet Landau, Helen Mirren, Emma Thompson, Viola Davis, Angela Basset, Jonathon Groff....I am notorious for actor crushes.

Marsters said something interesting in regards to a question about Whedon and separating art from the artist. Read more... )

Been rewatching Buffy as a comfort show - and it still holds up, and rather well at that. I just saw I Only Have Eyes for You - it's an episode that airs late in S2. I'd forgotten most of it. And forgot how good it is. The first few times I'd seen it - I hadn't thought much of it, but now, it resonates in a different way? The writers are commenting on multiple things - and it subverts various tropes. It's actually surprising the network let them do it - back in the 90s.
spoilers for those who never saw it, is there anyone? )

I didn't sleep well last night. Ached. And I ache now. Digestive issues, I think? Although did many things in the hopes of counter-acting them. My failing was giving in and having ice cream (Malawi Coffee and Rose Almond both Indian flavors and locally made). I did everything else right - baked salmon with zuccini and summer squash, and lots of water.

Oh well, it is what it is. Hopefully I can get the restless legs to calm down enough to sleep.

Here's a nice photo to round out this long rambling post.
