As a kid, I mostly listened to my father's music, but I did branch out a bit. I watched Soul Train, and would go take out funk and soul records from the library when I could - mostly this meant James Brown. The Revival was the first Funk/Soul album I ever got, and every so often I go back to it. Tony! Toni! Tone! were a cool band - and I just wish I'd caught their live show but I was a little too young when they were at their peak.
