Well, my Terrapins have made a fine mess of things. Barring remarkable favoritism on behalf of the selection committee, I expect this to be the first Maryland team to miss the NCAAs in 12 seasons.

Context: the last time Maryland failed to make the NCAA Tournament, I was a junior in high school. Exree Hipp was a college freshman. Not only that, Exree Hipp was a legitimate NBA prospect. Exree, who was about a foot taller than me, and weighed less than I did at the time.

Granted, Maryland could still qualify. With an impressive run... if they beat UNC. But they won't. Maryland won't even beat Clemson in the first round. Because they only play well against Duke and UVa.

So I'll reminsce instead. Yeah. About pop music.

Ultimately, I'm a Classic Rock/Motown person. But I got into popoular music in the late 80s early 90s when I was in Middle School and HS, and there's a big chunk of me that will always be stuck on music of that era. Rather than whatever's current. The sort of junk that played on the radio when I was working the closing shift at the pizza place.

I'm not sure if I can name a single song on this year or last year's Top 20. However, I can still recite "Jump Around" and "The Humpty Dance" from memory. I miss New Jack Swing. Seriously. Bell Biv Devoe's Poison. Tony Toni Tone. But not Ralph Tresvant because Sensitivity blew - does he even count?

And the hair metal. Yeah, okay. Cinderella, and bands of their ilk sucked big donkey balls. I listened to so much of that shit. And not just GNR and the Crue. Oh, no. Not just Winger, Warrant, Poison, and the LA Guns. Further down... Faster Pussycat. Bang Tango. Danger Danger. Enuff Z'nuff. WTF was I thinking? I have no idea, but, damn if that crap doesn't still amuse me on some level. Even though, yeah, it's a lot of crap.

My final words go towards "The Divinyls". I'm not sure if any music group or performed ever hit the sweet spot with one song/video like they did on that. Because I've seen them in other contexts. I've heard other songs. And in that one song, and that one video, Christina Amphlette is fucking sexy as hell. And in everything else I've ever seen outside of that video, she looks haggard and gross. And her voice just sounds all kind of wrong. For the whiskey and cigarettes - they giveth and they taketh away. But in that one song and that one video. It is the fucking shit. It still is.

I'm so sorry about Maryland! That sucks. You get used to just expecting certain teams to be there every time. Too bad a couple of them are NC and Duke. :P

I shall keep MD in my thoughts this weekend and hopefully they'll prevail. I'm also hoping that KU without Keith Langford doesn't totally screw up. *sigh*

Best and worst time of the year.

I take heart that when I get to be 80 or so and I'm confined to an old folks home, if someone puts on some party rap if the place wouldn't be hopping. Party rap was that much fun. Fond memories...

Secret Shame: I thought MC Hammer's "Pumps and a Bumb" is funny, and I still listen to it.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 04:28 (UTC)
Yeah. And our tourney steak was longer than UNC's and Duke's... I think the NCAA really wants to take Maryland but those dudes really haven't earned it.

As to KU - they're in, and even with the losing streak, I can't seem them getting worse than a 2 seed. Maybe a three. Langford should be back for the NCAA and I'm sure they'll do okay. Probably not great, but okay.

I saw Bell Biv Devoe in concert. Also Cinderella, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Skid Row, Poison and GnR. Good times.

Yeah, now that McCants has been cleared to practice again, I don't have high hopes for Maryland. Not that I would root for them anyway. . . :)

I will forever know all of the words to "Bust a Move" by Young MC. Eighties hh was great, and it's no surprise (since we're in the same cohort) that your guilty music is the same as mine. Good bad stuff.

I am so very jealous of you. I went to GNR/Metallica but Axl pouted in the dressing room so long we had to leave before GNR took the stage. (Stupid Washington Metro closing too early.) Also - I didn't see Poison until after the magic had died. But I did see Wu Tang in 1994. That was a highlight.

Not surprising on the Axl front. Diva.

As if Maryland will beat Clemson to even play UNC...

Eighties hh was great

Yeah. Young MC. And Rob Base. Heck. And even Kriss Kross.

Yeah. There was a point beyond which anyone could tolerate his primma dona bullshit.

One question: Kix?

The thing about a lot of the hair metal is that it's supposed to amuse. It's supposed to be silly and larger than life. Everybody wanted to play like Eddie and party like Dave, and if you had a semi-serious thought, you threw it in a power ballad to attract chicks to the gig, because otherwise, no groupies. It's the musical equivalent of pixie stix. There's nothing wrong with pixie stix except they're all sugar, and eventually we grow up and only have 'em once in a blue moon. But y'know what? C.C. DeVille didn't junk himself into oblivion and he didn't make it seem like it was OK for you to junk yourself there, either. So keep your hair metal flag flying, but keep near the exits when they start the pyro, OK?

Just wanted to say Hello ;)
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 05:38 (UTC)
Ah, yes. Hair metal. I grew my hair long and proud all because I had a double decker boom box and dubbed a copy of Def Leppard's Hysteria for a friend of a friend. That lead to Poison and Tesla and Bon Jovi and Skid Row and Kix and Lord Tracy and Extreme (Pornograffitti remains a favorite of mine) and Metal Edge magazine and a couple of tapes' worth of songs dubbed off of Metal Shop off the radio. Oh, and Aerosmith and Metallica and the Crue, of course. That led to other, perhaps more...mature? musical tastes, but to this day, all I need is a catchy guitar hook and an excuse to headband hair I no longer have (in length).

And our tourney steak was longer than UNC's and Duke's...

No no no... our streak was twenty-seven years before Doherty fucked it up. But yeah. I love MD, and I'm really rooting for them to make it. But to make it, they have to go through us, and I hope that doesn't happen. Heh.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 07:07 (UTC)
Oh... another Heels fan! ::swoons::

I'm so very excited about McCants being back. We'll see how that goes. I'm definitely more nervous if Maryland wins than if Clemson wins. Because, as my friend Doug says, you never know which Maryland is going to show up to play on any given night -- the Dook-stomping Maryland or the losing to Clemson Maryland. It's unclear.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 12:28 (UTC)
Kix? Oh yeah. They're from Hagerstown. One of my buddies had a cousin who knew Steve Whiteman's mom. I saw them at Hammerjacks in Baltimore a bunch of times.

And Yeah, Yeah, Yeah is hilarious. In a very juvenile sort of way. Also - "Don't Close Your Eyes". Because suicide is a bummer, dude.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 12:30 (UTC)
Was Karen. Was. Our current (and soon to be ended) streak is longer than your current streak. Heh.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 13:34 (UTC)
It's all so unfortunate because GnR rocked. Appetite for Destruction is still one of my favorite albums.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 13:48 (UTC)
Ahh. Gotcha.

That makes me sad.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 13:49 (UTC)
Yeah. It really is.

Use Your Illusion could be condensed into one fairly good album. I got Izzy Stradlin & The JuJu Hounds, and that was pretty decent. But Appetite is the shit. I can't believe that album is nearly twenty years old.
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 13:50 (UTC)
I listened to some of the hairiest of hair metal in my day. And heck, sometimes even now. But Extreme. Dude. Even then, I knew they were lame. Sure, Nuno was cool. But Gary Cherone was lame...
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 13:50 (UTC)
Hi!
Thursday, March 10th, 2005 14:17 (UTC)
You shouldn't give up on your Terps yet, I mean weirder things have happened! Ohio State did beat Illinois after all!

Oh and hi again!
