Disappointed Fan-hood

My Turtles laid a giant egg last night, losing 20-13 in Overtime at Northern Illinois.

This Maryland team entered the year ranked #15, and is supposed to be pretty good. And they played like junk. The special teams was fine. The defense looked okay, but missed some key tackles and committed a host of dumb penalties allowing NIU a few late scores. But the offense, oh that offense was crap. Jafar Williams and LaTrez Harrisson dropped touchdown passes. And QB Scott McBrien missed a few open recievers. I'm passing up Sugar Bowl tickets this year, in hopes that my Terps would have a major New Year's day bowl. If they play like that, it's just not going to happen.

Being a Maryland sports fan isn't quite like being a Red Sox fan, but we're quite prone to negativity. Way back when I was a college Freshman in 1994, I worked as a recruiter for the athletic department. Our fans have the expectations that the team would fall down somehow or somewhere.

Not winning the big games - that was our rep. 1-31-1 against Penn State. Losing our Major Bowls in Football. One ACC conference tourney championship in Football. (up until 2001) Never making the Final Four. Losing almost every big game against Duke or UNC, and getting jobbed by the Carolina Refs.

Things have been on an uptick in the last few years. With the new coach Ralph Friedgen, the football team won the conference for the first time since 1985. And Gary Williams avoided the stereotypical "Gary Williams Loss" (getting your doors blown off by your real opponents) en route to the 2002 NCAA Basketball Championship.

FSU is down. Miami and VaTech join the conference next year. The schedule is cake. This was the Football team's real chance to maybe squeeze off an undefeated year, or make a BCS bowl. Losing to NIU reveals us as being pretty fraudulent. I'm not so happy. I hope they right themselves.
