Q: How's that BCS working out so far?
A: Not so well. We're on game three. To this point, it's ass-whipping after ass-whipping. They did not set the matchups well at all.
Rose: Illinois vs. USC was a massive mismatch, that at least could have been a game if the Illini hadn't given the ball away so frequently.
Sugar: Another mismatch. Boy, Hawaii seemed to know they didn't belong there, showed almost no composure, and got totally pounded. I actually felt really sorry for Colt Brennan - kind of afraid he'd get killed. I haven't felt this scared for a player since Ty Detmer in that BYU vs. Texas A&M Holiday Bowl.
Fiesta: What is with these Bob Stoops teams getting wrecked in BCS games. This is four BCS Bowls in a row where Oklahoma's gotten both thoroughly outplayed and out-coached.
We really should have had Georgia vs. USC in the Rose. Taking Illinois screwed everything up. I fear for Kansas tomorrow night.

You're right about Illinois. Picking them certainly looked like a way to ensure USC a win. Virginia Tech-West Virginia might have been a better match up, too. But financially it didn't make sense. Oklahoma - Kansas would have been a tough sell to a national TV audience. As expected WVa failed to sell 40% of their ticket allotment. The extra tickets were sold quickly here, many to OU fans hoping for tickets, some of whom were already in town for Oklahoma State in the Insight Bowl. The match ups have been bad, but the bowl committees are happy.
At least Michigan - Florida was a good game.

I feel like this shouldn't be funny, but it kind of makes me giggle.

Rose: USC v Illinois
Orange: VA Tech
Sugar: Georgia
Fiesta: Oklahoma
And then having to make do with Mizzou/Kansas, Hawaii, and West Virginia. I guess they weren't going to give Oklahoma another WAC team, but Mizzou Georgia, West VA-VaTech would have been better. Mostly, from now on they just have to keep West Virginia in the East, where they might buy tickets.

Oklahoma hasn't won a BCS game since the loss to LSU in the split championship year, and they haven't looked any better prepared than they did in the game against USC the following year, either. (They came back against Boise St., but no Big 12 team goes down 14-0 and 28-10 against a WAC team, Baylor and Iowa St. included.)
I figured Hawaii didn't have a chance, but still: that was ugly.
And while I personally like that the Rose maintains the Pac-10/Big-10 match-up, I realize this wasn't the best year for it but I wish more people would accept the Sugar Bowl/SEC's role in not letting USC and Georgia match up, too; just as much as the Sugar is the required destination for the SEC champ and is always going to take the next best SEC team available, the Rose is the required destination for both the Pac-10 and Big-10 champs, and is always going to take the next best Pac-10 and Big-10 teams (and Michigan's already lost three Rose Bowls this century already, as I'm sure you know). In fact, it's all the Sugar Bowl's fault; that's my story and I'm sticking to it. The Sugar Bowl and Oklahoma.

And yes, I know that the matchups were largely a function of Bowl tie-ins, and who sits on conference steering committees. The Sugar wasn't going to give up Georgia and the Big Ten/Pac Ten, sitting both on the Rose Bowl Committee and being so deeply locked in with ABC (outside the BCS TV COntract) that's just how it will be. But, man, I just don't like seeing that matchup when I know it's a mismatch. Maybe next year, Illinois will actually belong there.
Also, What's up with Stoops. His teams have just not looked like real teams these last few Januarys
